OFFICE OF MIZHINAWE

DSC_5060_070_Edited-min.jpg

The Robinson Huron Treaty Litigation Fund has appointed the Honourable Harry S. LaForme to lead the Office of Mizhinawe for the Robinson Huron Treaty First Nations in the ongoing annuities litigation Settlement Agreement.

The Mizhinawe, in collaboration with the Robinson Huron Treaty leadership, will engage in information sessions from the settlement that arises from the negotiations with Canada and Ontario.

Dr. Alan Ojiig Corbiere states that the Mizhinawe was a central figure in our Anishinaabe leadership as a principal warrior and high ranking official.  The Mizhinawe played an important function in formal business and negotiations with the Chiefs.  He would be the keeper of the records and other important objects such as wampum belts.  While the role of Mizhinawe is no longer a formal part of Anishinaabe Councils or band politics, the Elders tell us that now is the time to reinstitute our traditional names and positions for Anishinaabe leadership.

Harry has an extensive background in First Nation leadership and law.  He will lead the engagement with the members and communities of the Robinson Huron Treaty Anishinaabek to ensure that they have accurate information about the annuities claim and that their voices are heard.  He will also provide information about the governing structure of the Robinson Huron Treaty Litigation Fund, formulas for distributing any settlement funds, and additional information regarding settlement of the litigation.

Other current members of the office of the Mizhinawe are:

Valerie Richer - Special Advisor

Aideen Nabigon - Special Advisor

Tasha Becker - Nenaakwenmaaget Yaasgaabwitaagewin - Coordination Manager

Janice LaForme - Operations Support

Harry and his team are looking forward to meeting with the 21 Robinson Huron Treaty First Nations and their members about the settlement agreement.
